Limited run of 80 shirts

March 26, 2010
Posted by: Colby

A long time friend of Colin and myself, Matt Hannickel drew this on a napkin over 3 years ago and we finally were able to make a shirt out of it. We made them with only 1 color ink to keep it simple so it kept the original look. Once these are gone we will not print them in this colorway again. You can buy them in our store in the apparel section. Big wheels are the roots kid!

Wolf Pack Hustle Recap

March 24, 2010
Posted by: Dylan

For Steve, here is my experience of this race:

The day of the race, Bryan and Dave Christensen of Rapha, who let us crash at his place for weekend, and I went on a ride up into Griffith Park. We got to see a pretty amazing view of the city and I had the chance to ride around on the gear I changed to for the race (48:14). We did about 26 miles, ironically.

We got food and crashed out til 10:30pm. I couldn’t sleep any longer, so I went out to meet a friend at a party in Silver Lake. Meanwhile Bryan slept through my phone calls, but ended up making it to Tang’s Donuts on time. When we got to Tang’s the parking lot was already packed and pouring into the streets. Everyone seemed to be kitted out and in their fastest gear. Bryan and I felt a bit undressed for the occasion, with only hoodies and shorts on and U-locks. The race was stalled until almost 4:30am so Hern could make sure the course was actually ready. By the time the race began to move, there must have been 300 people there, maybe more.

It was a rolling start. Riders were jockeying for front position the whole few miles before the race began, but were not supposed to pass the pace bike (Don). The start was an all out sprint, everyone trying to get ahead with a pack. Early on I got into the first pack of maybe 12 riders, only 3 of us were on track bikes—Austin from NYC and Bud from LA, and maybe another guy but I can’t remember. The race was FAST! So FAST! Big open boulevards and intersection weren’t something I was used to. The course was a “closed” course, but there were still plenty of the intersections that had cross traffic, causing some close calls. The turns weren’t as clear either. I pictured big barricades with arrows, but they were much harder to tell when you were coming at them in a pack at high speed. At least 5 turns caused the pack to scramble or back track. This was one of the more tiring aspects of the race—catch up! The pack was really tight, riding that I don’t have much experience with. When the 5 mile mark hit, people started to make moves, while others scrambled to keep up. Some guys crossed tires and a rider went down just to the left of me going at least 30mph, taking some other riders with him I think. I ran into him after the race. He was in tact but pretty pissed about it. The crash sounded horrible, chilling actually, the way he scraped on the chunky pavement. The last turn I had remembered from the marathon map was a left turn to a 2-3 mile sprint along the coast to the finish. The left was sketchy though! The barricades were misleading, causing some strong riders to be fooled. I had to hop onto a curb and cut a barricade to make the turn. Austin was one of the guys that got caught up in that turn.

I finished 2nd fixed, behind Bud, smashing as hard as I could into thick ocean fog. The best part was that we finished behind only 2 or 3 roadies. I think most people wrote the roadies off as having such an advantage, and that they would finish way ahead of the next track bike. This wasn’t the case!

The prize ceremony didn’t happen until 7am. It was now light out. Don, on of the organizers talked with one of the head of the police. He came up to Don smiling and shaking his hand asking, “How was the race? Was the course okay?” I was really pleasantly surprised about how supportive the cops were of the race.

This race was fucking epic! It allowed me to see LA in a way I hadn’t before. They have a cool scene of riders that are more down to ride fast than trick around, which is fresh.

3+ yr old cog

I just changed my cog yesterday, and I realized I hadn't changed it since it went on the hub more than three years ago. It's still good, but definitely showing some weathering. I have a 14T on right now which is some serious power/intensity for the knees.

Free Chrome Shoes...spread the word!

March 17, 2010
Posted by: tracko

In an attempt to let the world know how committed they are to their footwear line, Chrome announces their Turds For Gold Shoe Exchange. For two days only, Chrome will be slinging a new pair of shoes to anyone that sends them a worn-out pair of kicks.

"There are a lot of great shoe brands out their but few, if any, are made to handle the harsh demands of riding in the city," says Chrome Marketing Director, Matt Sharkey.

“Our shoes are built to hold up under the toughest conditions and are designed 100% to address the needs of the everyday city cyclist. Not only did we want to build a shoe that was durable and functional, but we also paid close attention to overall fit and timeless style."

The exchange begins on Wednesday, March 17 and ends promptly the next day on Thursday, the 18th. Packages must be post marked by 3/18 to qualify and should include a return shipping address and shoe size info.

Please ship all packages to: Chrome Industries Attn: Turds for Gold/Sharkey 580 4th Street San Francisco, CA 94107

Not the happiest with Chrome these days! But free shoes are free shoes and I think every bicycling blog in the world should have this on their site! So re-post...re-post...re-post! Make me happy Sharkey!

This would be ideal to have by the end of the month when we head to the big apple.

"Once packed, you hook the foot-pump up to the case and inflate it. This provides extra protection whilst adding negligible weight. There’s enough room inside for a 64cm road frame (that’s pretty big) or a full-suspension road bike. There’s even a a pair of wheels for rolling this up to check-in."
